During the eighteenth century, a series of revolts, uprisings and revolutions transformed the power balance in the British and French Caribbean as enslaved people fought against European colonial slavers. In this fascinating event, Professor Vincent Brown (author – Tacky’s Revolt: The Story of an Atlantic Slave War) and Dr Peggy Brunache (Director of the Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies at the University of Glasgow), draw upon new scholarship and original research to explore the story and legacy of this resistance – from Tacky’s War (1760-1761) to the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804), which saw the establishment of a new independent state. Along the way we’ll investigate incredible figures such as Queen Nanny of the Maroons, the Fanti royal warlord Tacky, Akua Queen of Kingston, and Toussaint Louverture.
