Wyclef Jean, the former Haitian presidential hopeful and hip hop star has said that the cholera outbreak appears to be worse that authorities are saying.

Officials last reported that there have been 259 deaths and 3,342 confirmed cases.

"I strongly believe that it is much more people (being affected). The reason why I'm saying that is because the epidemic is moving very fast," said Jean.

He added: "Unless we intervene within the international community bringing all of our resources so that we can prevent this we're going to have more people dead than we had from the earthquake on January 12."

Hospital staff in Mirebalais, one hour north of Port-au-Prince, continue to treat a steady flow of patients, many of them repeats who can simply not get better and return for additional treatments.

Cholera is transmitted by contaminated water and food. No new cases have been immediately reported in the crowded, quake-ravaged capital Port-au-Prince, where experts are worried about the vulnerability of 1.3 million quake survivors living in tent and tarpaulin camps.
