Bernard Fils-Aimé fled Haiti with his mother in 1966 and later became an activist, creating the Haitian Refugee Center, which offers legal services and support to migrants arriving in South Florida. Fils-Aimé moved back to Haiti in 1995 to launch the county’s first cellular network. He died this month at age 67 of the coronavirus. Sunday TODAY’s Willie Geist remembers a life well-lived.

As the world recently bore witness to the devastating way the U.S. treated Haitian refugees coming to our borders seeking safety, one thing is clear: We must critically examine the ways in which we respond to the persons and families that come to the U.S. border seeking our protection. Several questions are illuminated: Was this legal? Are we complying with our moral, ethical and international obligations to displaced persons and honoring their dignity and human rights? How does a global pandemic impact these obligations?

Join us for a convening of experts who will discuss the most recent crisis at the U.S. border. Panelists provide further details into this and similar instances of human rights violations at our border. They will also examine current events from an international law perspective while simultaneously exploring the U.S.’s use of public health authority under Title 42 as justification for keeping out groups of Haitian refugees and other displaced persons. Finally, join us for a discussion of how to get involved with efforts to provide legal and other resources to Haitian and other refugees.

In recent years, the world has increasingly witnessed international conflict along ideological fault lines. Western policymakers warn that authoritarian countries like Russia and China are seeking to exploit divisions within democratic societies to promote autocratic tendencies, while for decades, authoritarian countries have accused the West of doing the same—of manufacturing domestic uprisings as a way to force liberalism upon them. While history is filled with examples of conflicts along these types of ideological lines, there is little consensus among scholars or policymakers about whether states’ governing ideologies matter for their foreign policy behavior and if they do, why.

This presentation will focus in on British and U.S. reactions to the Haitian Revolution to advance our understanding of the relationship between ideology and international conflict. I show that Britain and the United States both initially isolated Haiti due to fears that the Haitians would promote or otherwise inspire the spread of slave rebellions throughout the Caribbean and U.S. South. However, after outlawing slavery in its colonies, Britain’s foreign policy towards Haiti quickly diverged from that of the United States. Britain formally ended its regime dispute with Haiti, deepened its economic links with the country, and even began cooperation with Haitian leaders to police the Atlantic slave trade. Taken together, the case strongly suggests that British and U.S ideological stance on slavery was a primary source of their disputes with the Haitian regime.

Longtime immigrant rights leader Jean Montrevil has been granted three years of protection from deportation as part of a settlement for the First Amendment lawsuit Montrevil filed against the U.S. government that argued federal immigration officials targeted him for deportation due to his activism. Montrevil was abruptly deported to Haiti in 2018 but was allowed under the Biden administration to return home to New York in October to reunite with his family. We speak with Jean Montrevil, who says the news has given him “peace of mind” to enjoy the holiday season without fear of getting detained or deported, as well as Montrevil’s lawyer Alina Das, who attributes the highly unusual decision to the strength of the immigrant rights movement. “It is the power of organizing that brought the government to the negotiating table,” says Das.

When Dimitry was a child, he was surrounded by homophobia. He was called a “masisi,” a homophobic word for “gay” and was poked with sticks at recess by peers. And his father hurled condoms at him while telling him to “be a man” and have sex with women. After moving to Miami, he saw a young gay man from the Bahamas who was kicked out of his home for being gay. In short, Dimitry had little incentive to come out. But he found the strength to do so anyway, and in the process, built a stronger relationship with his mother and learned an invaluable lesson: “We have to have that patience to teach them how to love us.”

In an exclusive interview, we speak with Jean Montrevil, an immigrant rights leader who was deported to Haiti in 2018. He returned home to New York and reunited with his family Monday on a special 90-day parole. He hopes to stay longer. Montrevil was a founding member of the New Sanctuary Coalition, which worked with Families for Freedom to engage churches in immigrant defense. ICE targeted him for his activism, using a decades-old conviction as pretext to deport him. In his first interview since landing, Montrevil tells Democracy Now! he will continue to speak out and implore the current administration to “take a second look at their policies and to stop deportations to Haiti.” His longtime lawyer Alina Das says, “We don’t believe that anyone should be targeted for deportation, to be jailed, to be taken away from their family, to be expelled from this country because they’ve chosen to speak out.”

https://democracynow.org - On Tuesday, immigrant rights leader Jean Montrevil was deported to Haiti after residing in the United States for over three decades. He came to the U.S. from Haiti with a green card in 1986 at the age of 17. During the height of the crack epidemic, he was convicted of possession of cocaine and sentenced to 11 years in prison. He served that time. Upon his release, he married a U.S. citizen, had four children, became a successful small businessman, as well as an immigrant rights activist. He has had no further interaction with the criminal justice system. Joining us from Haiti is Jean Montrevil, who was deported to Haiti on Tuesday. We are also joined by Jani Cauthen, Jean’s former wife and the mother of three of his children.

Haiti has seen angry protesters burning tires and demanding the president's resignation. It's a campaign against government corruption that began on social media, with a single photograph posted by a Haitian-Canadian man. His name is Gilbert Mirambeau, and he had no idea his picture would have this kind of impact on the country.
