In the aftermath of the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti, SLC faculty, staff and students have struggled for a way to make sense of the tragedy and respond to the ongoing humanitarian crisis. While images of profound grief and suffering have been prominent in the news, an analysis of Haiti's history, the vibrancy of its culture and the importance of its political struggles have not been discussed as much. Please join us for a Teach-In on Haiti with four SLC faculty members who will provide historical, political, economic and social analysis on the current situation.

Speakers: Alwin A.D. Jones (Literature), Matilde Zimmermann (History) , Gina Philogene (Psychology) and Jamee Moudud (Economics).

Moderated by: Mary Dillard (History)

Original event date: Monday, February 1, 2010 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm
Event location: Reisinger Auditorium

Activist Kemi Seba reacts to his expulsion from Ivory Coast earlier this week.

At a press conference, the pan-Africanist criticized Ivorian authorities, and his home country, Benin, accusing them of violating his fundamental rights.

Despite the aversion of several governments in West Africa, Kemi Seba says he is determined to continue his fight against the CFA franc, a currency common to 14 African countries and guaranteed by France.

"There is a way forward and that is why we are fighting …

In the 1960s and 70s, Quebec saw an influx of Haitian immigrants fleeing Francois Duvalier’s dictatorship. By 1971, thousands of Haitians had immigrated to Quebec, the only other majority French-speaking society in North America. Arriving mostly in Montreal, Haitians encountered the Quiet Revolution, the perfect setting to establish their exiled community and combat Duvalier’s regime from abroad. Their battle for liberation infused with Quebec’s own.

But who are these Haitian immigrants, and what do we really know about their history? We speak with musician Jenny Salgado (a.k.a. J Kyll) and educator and historian Alain Saint-Victor to learn more about the relationship between Haiti and Quebec and the influences of the Haitian community in “la belle province.”

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us—one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America—a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

#CantJustPreach

Lyrics:
Every day I wake and,
Everything is broken,
Turning off my phone just to get out of bed.
Get home every evening,
And history’s repeating,
Turning off my phone cuz its hurting my chest.

And heaven knows I’m not helpless,
But what can I do?
I can’t see the use in me crying
If I’m not even trying to make the change I wanna see

I can’t sit and hope, I
Can’t just sit and pray, that
I can find a love, when
All I see is pain

Falling to my knees
Though I do believe
Oh, I can’t just preach baby preach (woah oh oh oh oh ohhhh)
I can’t just preach, baby, preach

All I hear is voices,
Everybody’s talking,
Nothing real is happening, cause nothing is new.
Now when all is tragic,
And I just feel sedated,
Why do I feel numb, Is that all I can do?

And heaven knows I’m not helpless, yeah
But I’m only human.
Can’t see the use in me crying,
If I’m not even trying to make the change I want to see.

I can’t sit and hope, I
Can’t just sit and pray, that
I can find a love, when
All I see is pain

Falling to my knees
Though I do believe
Oh, I can’t just preach baby preach (woah oh oh oh oh ohhhh)
I can’t just preach, baby, preach

And heaven knows I’m not helpless,
What can I do?
Can’t see the use in me crying
If I’m not even trying to make the change I wanna see

I can’t sit and hope, I
Can’t just sit and pray, that
I can find a love, when
All I see is pain

Falling to my knees
Though I do believe
Oh, I can’t just preach baby preach (woah oh oh oh oh ohhhh)
I can’t just preach, baby, preach

Falling to my knees
And though I do believe
I can’t just preach, baby, preach.

In this episode of "People's Party With Talib Kweli," Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with activist, social justice leader, and author Tamika D. Mallory. Here's what we got into over the course of this very important conversation:

• Tamika's parents helping found the 'The National Action Network' headed by Rev. Al Sharpton.
• Being inspired by the extreme work ethic of Rev. Sharpton and N.A.N. essentially raising her.
• The financial woes that activist organizations face while trying to stay relevant.
• Drawing inspiration from the work of elders such as Dr. John Henrik Clarke and Dr. Ben.
• Some of her concerns regarding charter schools in New York City.
• People like herself being motivated to join activist movements through personal tragedies.
• Being driven by those people that have invested so much of themselves to the cause.
• Criticism from the mother of Tamir Rice about Tamika "monopolizing" the fight for racial justice.
• The intentional campaign formed to defame Tamika's character.
• Backlash over not distancing herself from The Nation of Islam's leader Louis Farrakhan.
• Valuable lessons Tamika received from her mother about never being afraid to speak her truth.
• Fighting for black women while not letting her black brothers feeling abandoned.
• The lack of attention being brought to black women that have been brutalized by police.
• The mission of her activist organization 'Until Freedom' and using the Black Panthers as a model.
• Debating if videos like George Floyd's murder are too long and traumatic for public viewing.
• Benjamin Crump calling on Tamika to help bring attention to the death of Breonna Taylor.
• Celebrities using their platform to shine a light on activist movements.
• Tamika's response to people accusing her organization of stealing money.
• Her book 'State Of Emergency' spotlighting of a convo between Cardi B and Angela Davis.
• Activist Ella Baker being her primary model of how she approaches leadership.
• The important contributions that each leader of 'Until Freedom' bring to the table.
• Instagram making Talib delete a post about the treatment of Haitian immigrants at the border.
• The Biden administration's response to the Haitian immigrant crisis.
• Progressives as well as racists residing within the Democratic tent.
• Her take on Ice Cube's comments regarding Trump during the last election.
• Bernie Sanders' campaign falling short on many black issues.
• How the right wing views crime in communities of color.
• Wishing she and others held the Obama administration's feet to the fire more.
• How prioritizing mental wellness is a matter of life and death.
• What concerns her most about the viral videos of black people's pain.

At that meeting US, French, OAS and Canadian officials discussed overthrowing Haiti’s President and putting the country under UN trusteeship.
