The Haitians preserved the culture of the indigenous people of Haiti known as the Taino. One element in the Haitian culture that comes from the Taino is cassava bread. Cassava bread is a crispy flat bread made from cassava flour and was a staple dish of the Taino. To make cassava bread, the cassava is grated, all the poisonous liquids are squeezed out, dried into a flour, and sifted on a flat griddle pan made of cast iron. In Haiti, cassava bread is usually served with peanut butter.

With the U.S occupation in 1915, the American culture and language became more presence in Haiti. Then after the 2010 earthquake, the number of American organizations established in Haiti has increase tremendously. Can these organizations influence the Haitian culture?

Being possessed, it turns out, is exhausting work. Just ask Mambo Edeline St. Armand. While popular culture portrays Vodou as full of curses and sticking pins into little dolls, the religion has in fact played a central role in Haitian cultural identity since the country's birth, a result of the New World's first and only successful slave rebellion. Since Brooklyn is home to the largest Haitian population outside of Haiti, we sent Thomas Morton into our own backyard to witness the realities of being possessed by Vodou's multitude of rowdy, rum-thirsty spirits.

The Culture Challenge: HAITIAN wife & AMERICAN husband debate cultural differences! | Who's right!?

Just looking at us on the surface, you might think that we both come from the same place, but the reality is that we actually have very different backgrounds and upbringings. Kothney-Issa was born (and lived in), Port-Au-Prince, Haiti until she was 7 years old. Before moving to the United States…first Florida & then Missouri. Marek on the other hand was born and raised in a working class neighborhood in Kansas City, MO.

Knowing each other since the age of 13 and now being married for nearly 6 years, some of those cultural differences are bound to surface. Today we’re diving into the discussions and debating some of the most heavily contrasted & funny ways in which we each see the world. Some of the questions include:

1. True or False: my spouse’s native language is difficult to learn?
2. How do you greet people in your household?
3. What was your families “household mantra” growing up?
4. What day was church day?
5. What was the most cooked meal in your household weekly?
6. Who owns the food on your plate?
7. In your household, did your parents approve of other adults complimenting you excessively?
8. Was it normal to get disciplined outside of your immediate household?
9. What age do kids need to leave the house?
10. Can sickness be healed with household remedies?

We hope you enjoy this video, and maybe even learn a thing or two, like the fact that Kothney-Issa speaks Haitian Creole fluently! Enjoy!
