Heroines of the Haitian Revolution: Tales of Victory and Valour recounts the stories of African women who played significant roles during the Haitian Revolution. The book sets the scene by providing a brief overview of the early history of the island of Haiti and the political, social and economic climate in which the Haitian Revolution began. It goes on to highlight the roles played by women such as Cécile Fatiman, the voodoo priestess who features prominently in the Caiman Woods ceremony at the start of the revolution; Marie-Jeanne Lamartiniére, who fought at the famous battle of Crête-à-Pierrot in March 1802 and Sanité Bélair, a sergeant in Toussaint L’Ouverture, revolutionary army. This book highlights the active involvement of nine courageous women and although little is known about their backgrounds, their stories and contribution takes the form of a narrative set in the context of historical events taking place at the time. It also summarises the role of African women generally during the revolution, but most importantly sheds light on these largely forgotten women and their significant contribution to creating Haiti in 1804 – the first Black independent republic in the New World.

Strayer Chapter 16

11 Views · 2 years ago

During the eighteenth century, a series of revolts, uprisings and revolutions transformed the power balance in the British and French Caribbean as enslaved people fought against European colonial slavers. In this fascinating event, Professor Vincent Brown (author – Tacky’s Revolt: The Story of an Atlantic Slave War) and Dr Peggy Brunache (Director of the Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies at the University of Glasgow), draw upon new scholarship and original research to explore the story and legacy of this resistance – from Tacky’s War (1760-1761) to the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804), which saw the establishment of a new independent state. Along the way we’ll investigate incredible figures such as Queen Nanny of the Maroons, the Fanti royal warlord Tacky, Akua Queen of Kingston, and Toussaint Louverture.
