A trip to Haiti is like a trip back in time.
Tranquil beaches, tumbling waterfalls and pine-tree-capped mountains; the raw beauty of Haiti's landscapes is certainly more than what most travellers expect when visiting Haiti.
Despite Haiti’s well-documented struggles, exacerbated lately by natural disasters and political turmoil, the pride and resilience of the Haitian People is evident throughout the country. It only takes one visit to witness the overwhelming kindness of its people and the breathtaking beauty of its natural landscape. A foreign land for sure, but well worth the visit.

We were fortunate enough to visit the Caribbean International Language School during our time in Haiti and meet Augusnel, the founder of the school. They are doing great work in providing education and language training to the future generations of Haiti.

And here we come full circle. After fighting France for their freedom, then uniting against international powers, you would expect that the fighting would be over for Haiti. But Napoleon Bonaparte had different plans. He would send 80,000 men under the command of Charles Leclerc to fight and arrest Louverture. But Louverure's words will prove to be prophetic. And when the diplomatic Louverture is removed from the picture, France will have to reckon with the wrath of Dessalines.

This presentation examines the interstices of mysticism, mothering/hospitality and community organizing in the lives of women of African descent in Brazil and the United States – a confluence about which there is little extant scholarship. Using an analytical framework that incorporates history of religions of the Afro-Atlantic diaspora, ethnographic and historical studies of contemporary social justice movements, oral histories, and womanist ethics, my work explores the moral and mystic universe of contemporary Afro-Brazilian and African American women activists.
A collaboration between Africana Studies and the Brazil Initiative, with the generous co-sponsorship of the Watson Institute, the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice, the Center for Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women, and Religious Studies.

Haitian-American Community Coalition (HCC) is a nonprofit community-based service provider dedicated to empowering the people of Brooklyn through advocacy, health promotion, disease prevention, and supportive services since 1982. Haitian-American Community Coalition serves tens of thousands of constituents each year, 98% of whom are Caribbean, Latin American, and Black Americans. HCC’s doors are open to all New Yorkers facing food insecurity, financial crises, social injustices, and unsafe home environments.
Haitian-American Community Coalition is a leader in HIV education, prevention, testing, care, and PrEP/PEP services in NYC. HCC also operates an Article-31 mental health clinic, supportive housing to people in crises, mobile community outreach services, English as a second language courses, document translation, and so much more through their vast network of NYC-based partners offering resources and benefits to those in need.
In the wake of COVID-19, countless people experienced food insecurity and financial hardships with nowhere to go and no one to help. That’s when HCC shined as a beacon of hope for their community. Thanks to a grant from the Robinhood Foundation, HCC collaborates with the Flatlands Community Partnership to feed hundreds of families in need each week. Another incredible way that HCC works to empower this community.
