On March 31, 2021, Edward Onaci presented “Liberating the Territory: Activism, Repression, and the Republic of New Afrika” as part of the History Is Lunch series.

On March 31, 1968, more than five hundred Black nationalists—including Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party director Lawrence Guyot—convened in Detroit. Many concluded that Black Americans' best hope for liberation was the creation of a sovereign nation-state, the Republic of New Afrika, which would be created from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.

“This decision to ‘free the land’ indicted the United States as unredeemable and uninhabitable for descendants of the country’s enslaved,” said Onaci, author of Free the Land: The Republic of New Afrika and the Pursuit of a Black Nation-State.

New Afrikan citizens demanded reparations for the enslavement and subsequent inhumane treatment of Black Americans. The group framed their struggle as one that would allow the descendants of enslaved people to choose freely whether they should be citizens of the United States.

“New Afrikans remade their lifestyles and daily activities to create a self-consciously revolutionary culture,” Onaci said. “The RNA's tactics and ideology were essential to the evolution of Black political struggles.”

Edward Onaci is an associate professor of history and African American and Africana Studies at Ursinus College. He earned his BA in history from Virginia State University and his MA and PhD in history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Onaci’s book Free the Land: The Republic of New Afrika and the Pursuit of a Black Nation-State was published by UNC Press in 2020.

Afin de gagner suffisamment d'argent pour bien vivre, Ding Ruilin et son mari travaillent extrêmement dur pour ouvrir un restaurant et le tenir. Mais à cause de l'exploitation et des abus du gouvernement du PCC, ils restent lourdement endettés et sont contraints de partir travailler à l'étranger. Pour gagner plus d'argent, Ding Ruilin cumule deux emplois. Le lourd fardeau de son travail et l'indifférence des gens autour d'elle lui permettent de se rendre compte de la souffrance et de la détresse d'une vie consacrée à l'argent. Alors qu'elle se trouve dans un état de souffrance et de confusion, elle rencontre Lin Zhixin, une camarade de classe du lycée. Au cours de leurs conversations, Ding Ruilin voit que Lin Zhixin a pu comprendre beaucoup de choses grâce à sa foi en Dieu. Avec la présence de Dieu, elle ressent paix spirituelle et bonheur, et vit de façon détendue et tranquille, ce qui donne envie à Ding Ruilin de croire en Dieu aussi. Peu de temps après, pour gagner encore plus d'argent, Ding Ruilin et son mari reprennent un restaurant. Mais la fatigue de longue durée rend Ding Ruilin gravement malade, au point qu'elle risque d'être paralysée. Le tourment de sa maladie l'amène à réfléchir à la vie. Pour quoi devrait-on vivre ? Sacrifier sa vie pour la richesse et la célébrité en vaut-il la peine ? L'argent peut-il aider les gens à échapper au vide et au malheur ? Peut-il les sauver de la mort ? Grâce à l'échange de ses sœurs sur la parole de Dieu, Ding Ruilin parvient à voir clairement les réponses aux questions sur la vie. Elle découvre la chose la plus importante à chercher dans la vie et trouve enfin la libération spirituelle. Avec l'orientation de la parole de Dieu, Ding Ruilin découvre enfin le bonheur…
