In the late eighteenth century, the French colony of Saint Domingue teetered on an unstable social pyramid. At the top of the hierarchy were wealthy white plantation owners who enslaved the vast majority of the island’s population: hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans and their descendants. New ideas about natural rights swirled around the Atlantic world and reached the people of Saint Domingue—including enslaved people—and helped launch the most radical of the Atlantic revolutions. But the fight didn’t end with independence, as the new nation of Haiti continued to struggle for its survival and the end of slavery.

During the eighteenth century, a series of revolts, uprisings and revolutions transformed the power balance in the British and French Caribbean as enslaved people fought against European colonial slavers. In this fascinating event, Professor Vincent Brown (author – Tacky’s Revolt: The Story of an Atlantic Slave War) and Dr Peggy Brunache (Director of the Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies at the University of Glasgow), draw upon new scholarship and original research to explore the story and legacy of this resistance – from Tacky’s War (1760-1761) to the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804), which saw the establishment of a new independent state. Along the way we’ll investigate incredible figures such as Queen Nanny of the Maroons, the Fanti royal warlord Tacky, Akua Queen of Kingston, and Toussaint Louverture.

What is the Haiti Core Group?
The Canadian government is part of a colonial alliance in Haiti.
The Core Group (US, Canada, France, Brazil, Spain, Germany, EU, UN, OAS representatives) has heavily shaped Haitian affairs and has overseen the descent of political life in Haiti.
Formally established by the UN Security Council after US, French and Canadian troops overthrew Haiti’s elected government in 2004, the Core Group unofficially traces its roots to the 2003 “Ottawa Initiative on Haiti”. At that meeting US, French, OAS and Canadian officials discussed overthrowing Haiti’s President and putting the country under UN trusteeship.

Haitian-American Community Coalition (HCC) is a nonprofit community-based service provider dedicated to empowering the people of Brooklyn through advocacy, health promotion, disease prevention, and supportive services since 1982. Haitian-American Community Coalition serves tens of thousands of constituents each year, 98% of whom are Caribbean, Latin American, and Black Americans. HCC’s doors are open to all New Yorkers facing food insecurity, financial crises, social injustices, and unsafe home environments.

Haitian-American Community Coalition is a leader in HIV education, prevention, testing, care, and PrEP/PEP services in NYC. HCC also operates an Article-31 mental health clinic, supportive housing to people in crises, mobile community outreach services, English as a second language courses, document translation, and so much more through their vast network of NYC-based partners offering resources and benefits to those in need.

In the wake of COVID-19, countless people experienced food insecurity and financial hardships with nowhere to go and no one to help. That’s when HCC shined as a beacon of hope for their community. Thanks to a grant from the Robinhood Foundation, HCC collaborates with the Flatlands Community Partnership to feed hundreds of families in need each week. Another incredible way that HCC works to empower this community.
