Haiti: A New Hope: Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, suffering everything from devastating natural disasters to brutal dictatorships. Now, there are hopes that tourism could help it rise from the ashes.

“In the 60s, we were number one in tourism for this part of the world”, says Fritz Parets. “And then, it collapsed...” Parets is at the helm of a bold new venture: a 55-bedroom luxury hotel, part of a scheme to put the nation back on the touristic map. Staff are professionally trained and almost all Haitian. “I live thanks to tourism”, says plumber Islet Jean-François. “It really makes life better here! When tourists stop coming, everything collapses.” Yet Haiti remains impoverished. Years of intensive farming have exhausted the country’s soils, and education is chronically underfunded. Despite the nation’s problems, hotel group boss Charles Fombrun is proud of its rich history. “It’s the first black republic… We were at the base of the end of colonialism, the slave’s revolution. Independence!”

This basin is found in the northern department between the communes of Borgne and Port-Margot. It is call Bassin Waka or Bassin des Guérisseurs (healing basin).

Why is it called Bassin des Guérisseurs? During pre-colombian times, the indians (Taínos) believed it has mystical and healing power when they were sick. Very often when they were sick, they would plunged in this basin and they would be healed. It is not only the indians that had this belief in their culture. Going back in history, during the time of the fight for independence, there was a troop that was coming from Port-de-Paix, the "country" of Mr. Hogarth, that was lead by Capois Lamort. Before entering Okap (Cap-Haïtien) for the last battle of the independence they made a stop here. They bathed, they did what they had to do, and head for Cap-Haïtien. During the battles, the wounded would come back to the basin with the belief if they washed their wound in it, they would be healed.

This myth might be ambiguous for some tourists, even Haitians, or foreigners; but if you go to Asia, you will find the same belief for the Ganges River where the asians believe that when they are sick, they can bathe in the Ganges River and they’ll be cured. Here, the indians (Taïnos) believed if we bathe in the water, we can also be cured. To this day there are some religious followers especially those of Vodou that uses this basin for different means, and mystically as well as the indians used to. So even if you found yourself in different part of the world, come to Haïti head towards the north to discover this basin. However it will be a better experience if you go through Belle Vue Tours and AGTour Nord d’Haïti.

The Haitian Revolution is a unique historical event in many ways. It was both an offshoot of the French Revolution, but also an anti-colonialist revolution. It was also the second American nation to successfully win its independence. But before we can talk about the Revolution itself, we have to talk about how influential Haiti was to France's economy and how it's complicated social structure primed it for revolt and revolution. Because here, in the colony built upon the countless bodies of the enslaved, sugar is king. But not for long.

In the late eighteenth century, the French colony of Saint Domingue teetered on an unstable social pyramid. At the top of the hierarchy were wealthy white plantation owners who enslaved the vast majority of the island’s population: hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans and their descendants. New ideas about natural rights swirled around the Atlantic world and reached the people of Saint Domingue—including enslaved people—and helped launch the most radical of the Atlantic revolutions. But the fight didn’t end with independence, as the new nation of Haiti continued to struggle for its survival and the end of slavery.

The revolution kicks off with such strength and ferocity, the French leaders in charge couldn't believe that slaves had planned and executed the revolt. The Big Whites, Little Whites, and Free People of Color all began infighting. Meanwhile, Haiti's plantations and mills were quickly engulfed by flames as the uprising moved across the island. But as the Revolution began to claim lives and leaders, the formerly enslaved people found that they were not immune to infighting either. But amidst the swelling chaos, new leaders rose. Key figures like Toussaint Louverture.

(1492) - Christopher Columbus lands on the island of Hispaniola and begins enslaving its people. European diseases and brutal working conditions bring the indigenous population to the brink of extinction. Over the next three hundred years, hundreds of thousands of slaves are imported to meet the needs of their European colonizers. (1791-1804) - Fueled by the ideals of the French Revolution, the Haitian Revolution begins when slaves and those of mixed race rise up against their oppressors in one of the largest and most successful slave rebellions in history. (January 1, 1804) - Haiti wins its independence and becomes the first nation to be founded by former slaves. Fearing the spread of slave revolts, European powers and the United States pursue a policy of isolation towards Haiti. (1862) - The U.S. officially recognizes Haitian sovereignty during its own struggle to end slavery, the American Civil War.

During the eighteenth century, a series of revolts, uprisings and revolutions transformed the power balance in the British and French Caribbean as enslaved people fought against European colonial slavers. In this fascinating event, Professor Vincent Brown (author – Tacky’s Revolt: The Story of an Atlantic Slave War) and Dr Peggy Brunache (Director of the Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies at the University of Glasgow), draw upon new scholarship and original research to explore the story and legacy of this resistance – from Tacky’s War (1760-1761) to the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804), which saw the establishment of a new independent state. Along the way we’ll investigate incredible figures such as Queen Nanny of the Maroons, the Fanti royal warlord Tacky, Akua Queen of Kingston, and Toussaint Louverture.

The first and only successful slave revolution in the Americas began in 1791 when thousands of brutally exploited slaves rose up against their masters on Saint-Domingue. Égalité for All: Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution explores this history through music, voodoo ritual, powerful re-creations, and insightful writers and historians. Laurent Dubois and others weave the stories of slaves, free people of African descent, wealthy whites, and French administrators into a tale of insurrection, war, heroism, and victory.
