Today we will be making "Griot", Haiti's National Dish.

For those of you who don't know, "Griot" is a comfort food meal often cooked in large quantity with a side of fried plantain and pikliz (Picked Vegetable Relish).

Personally I'm not a fan of eating pork, but when a family party, or celebration comes around I cannot resist the delicious flavors of Griot.

What is the Haiti Core Group?
The Canadian government is part of a colonial alliance in Haiti.
The Core Group (US, Canada, France, Brazil, Spain, Germany, EU, UN, OAS representatives) has heavily shaped Haitian affairs and has overseen the descent of political life in Haiti.
Formally established by the UN Security Council after US, French and Canadian troops overthrew Haitiโ€™s elected government in 2004, the Core Group unofficially traces its roots to the 2003 โ€œOttawa Initiative on Haitiโ€. At that meeting US, French, OAS and Canadian officials discussed overthrowing Haitiโ€™s President and putting the country under UN trusteeship.

Prof. Christopher Tinson is the 2018 winner of the inaugural Pauli Murray Book Prize from the African American Intellectual History Society for his latest publication, "Radical Intellect: Liberator Magazine and Black Activism in the 1960's."
Book description: The rise of black radicalism in the 1960s was a result of both the successes and the failures of the civil rights movement. The movement's victories were inspirational, but its failures to bring about structural political and economic change pushed many to look elsewhere for new strategies. During this era of intellectual ferment, the writers, editors, and activists behind the monthly magazine Liberator (1960โ€“71) were essential contributors to the debate. In the first full-length history of the organization that produced the magazine, Christopher M. Tinson locates the Liberator as a touchstone of U.S.-based black radical thought and organizing in the 1960s. Combining radical journalism with on-the-ground activism, the magazine was dedicated to the dissemination of a range of cultural criticism aimed at spurring political activism, and became the publishing home to many notable radical intellectual-activists of the period, such as Larry Neal, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Harold Cruse, and Askia Toure.
By mapping the history and intellectual trajectory of the Liberator and its thinkers, Tinson traces black intellectual history beyond black power and black nationalism into an internationalism that would shape radical thought for decades to come.

Port-au-Prince in Haiti. Several shots of students and buildings at the University of Haiti. Students entering a building marked 'Anatomie'. Anatomy.
L'Observatoire du Seminaire-College Saint Martiale. Observatory. View of missionary brother taking notes beside a wind-gauge; another brother looking through a telescope. A brother descends the circular staircase from the top of the observatory. Several shots of brothers sitting at desks and taking notes. One brother checks readings of a number of scientific instruments (probably barometric pressure and moisture content of air).
Archbishop of Haiti greeting (handshakes) dignitaries visiting Haiti.
A group of adolescent boys, accompanied by a missionary priest, walks through a plantation in Haiti. The boys inspect a man-made water channel. A woman leads a donkey loaded with materials on its back down a road. View of a sugar-cane field; camera pans across a field, to a road and stone wall. In the countryside, men walk alongside oxen pulling a loaded cart. Shot of a plantation. A bell, suspended outside, near the plantation fields. Close-up of bell, with words cast on its exterior. A (non-functioning) fountain in a field. A priest with Haitian boys in the countryside. Women walking in the rugged countryside, bundles on their heads. Shots of 2 former colonial French forts in Haiti. Shots of cannons and cannonballs preserved from colonial times, in a field. A cemetery, showing the tomb of a former colonial governor of Haiti. The Capetian Hospital in Haiti. Shot of nursing sisters and a man walking in the hospital. 5 shots of churches in Haiti. 2 shots of the Isle de la Tortue, its coastline as viewed from an airplane. Panning shot of rugged, mountainous Haitian landscape.
Panning shot of a town in Haiti, ending with a view of people outside of a church. Lines of Haitians walking through a town. Women and children walking in a religious procession, behind a banner, along a street and into a church in Haiti.
