In July 2021, gunmen broke into Haitiโs presidential residence and murdered the countryโs president with automatic weapons.
This kind of violent assassination is usually associated with military coups and civil wars. But, new evidence has come to light that may indicate this was a drug hit, carried out to protect the interests of cartels with connections deep in the Haitian government itself.
This is the story of how Haitiโs president may have become another casualty of the War on Drugs.

We look in depth at โThe Ransom,โ a new series in The New York Times that details how France devastated Haitiโs economy by forcing Haiti to pay massive reparations for the loss of slave labor after enslaved Haitians rebelled, founding the worldโs first Black republic in 1804. We speak with historians Westenley Alcenat and Gerald Horne on the story of Haitiโs finances and how Haitian demands for reparations have been repeatedly shut down. Alcenat says the series โexposes the rest of the world to a knowledge that actually has existed for over a hundred years,โ and while he welcomes the series, he demands The New York Times apologize for publishing racist Haitian stereotypes in 2010 by columnist David Brooks. Horne also requests The New York Times make the revelatory documents that the series cites accessible to other historians. He says the series will โhopefully cause us to reexamine the history of this country and move away from the propaganda point that somehow the United States was an abolitionist republic when actually it was the foremost slaveholderโs republic.โ

The United Nations human rights office has expressed concern about rising violence around Haitiโs capital, Port-au-Prince, saying 99 people have been reported killed in recent fighting between rival gangs in the Cite Soleil district alone.
The warning on Saturday came hours after the UN Security Council unanimously approved a resolution renewing the mandate of a UN office in the Caribbean nation and calling on all countries to stop the transfer of small arms, light weapons and ammunition to anyone there supporting gang violence and criminal activity.
UN humanitarian agencies said they were ready to help embattled communities once it is safe to do so.
Louis-Henri Mars is the head of Lakou Lapee, a peacebuilding organisation that runs community projects for young Haitians.
