Across the water, the French National Assembly debate a new document, drafted by Marquis de Lafayette, The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Little do they know that this document will ignite the fuse leading to the powder keg in Saint-Domingue. Hold on to your fancy Revolutionary hats because things are going to get absolutely buck wild. Alliances will be formed and break within weeks, laws will last about the same time, and while all this chaos is happening, a revolt is forming.

Dive into the life of Henry Christophe, a former enslaved person and leader in the Haitian Revolution and the only king of Haiti.

--

The royal couple of Haiti rode into their coronation to thunderous applause. After receiving his ornate crown, Henry Christophe ascended his throne, towering 20 meters in the air. But little did the cheering onlookers know that the first king of Haiti would also be its last. Who was this revolutionary? Marlene Daut details how a man enslaved at birth rose through the ranks to become king.

Authentic revolution of human history

The American Revolution did more for the world than to cement the independence of 13 British colonies in North America from their mother country. The ideals and freedoms fought for by the founders of the United States spread throughout the wider Atlantic World and the world, spawning numerous other "revolutions," including the Haitian Revolution that began in 1791. Join Professor Bob Allison (Chair, Suffolk University Department of History, Language and Global Culture) in conversation with Professor Ashli White of the University of Miami, author of "Encountering Revolution; Haiti and the Making of the Early Republic."

Heroines of the Haitian Revolution: Tales of Victory and Valour recounts the stories of African women who played significant roles during the Haitian Revolution. The book sets the scene by providing a brief overview of the early history of the island of Haiti and the political, social and economic climate in which the Haitian Revolution began. It goes on to highlight the roles played by women such as Cécile Fatiman, the voodoo priestess who features prominently in the Caiman Woods ceremony at the start of the revolution; Marie-Jeanne Lamartiniére, who fought at the famous battle of Crête-à-Pierrot in March 1802 and Sanité Bélair, a sergeant in Toussaint L’Ouverture, revolutionary army. This book highlights the active involvement of nine courageous women and although little is known about their backgrounds, their stories and contribution takes the form of a narrative set in the context of historical events taking place at the time. It also summarises the role of African women generally during the revolution, but most importantly sheds light on these largely forgotten women and their significant contribution to creating Haiti in 1804 – the first Black independent republic in the New World.
