La inhabitada isla de La Navasse (en español isla Navaza) es reclamada por Haití ante la administración de los Estados Unidos. La superficie total de Haití se extiende en 27.750 km², albergando una población de 10.033.000 habitantes (2009).4 Su capital y ciudad principal es Puerto Príncipe. El 12 de enero de 2010, a las 21:53 UTC (16:53 en el horario local) Haití fue golpeado por un terremoto de magnitud 6.9 en la escala Richter, el terremoto más severo del país en 200 años. El epicentro del temblor fue cerca de la capital Puerto Príncipe. Se ha estimado que el número de muertos llegó a más de 300.000 personas y más de 1 millón quedaron damnificados.<br /><br />El Palacio Presidencial fue muy afectado, colapsando el segundo piso sobre el primero. El edificio del Parlamento, la oficina de las Naciones Unidas y la Catedral Nacional también fueron dañadas. La nueva sede de Gobierno de Haití será construida en la zona Croix-des-bouquets a unos 20 kilómetros de Puerto Príncipe.
