De son vrai nom Théodore Beaubrun, Languichatte Debordus est considéré par les critiques comme le plus grand comédien haïtien de tous les temps.
Certains le surnomment le Molière haïtien et d'autre le roi du rire ; et pendant plus de 40 ans, Languichatte a su apporter de l'humour dans l'art haïtien en tournant au ridicule de gens de toute couche de la société de chez nous à travers ses pièces de théâtres, ses sketches, et blagues. Ce qui le diffère des comédiens contemporains est son style original, simple et unique. Il n'a pas besoin de faire des niaiseries pour provoquer le rire chez son audience. Avec son pantalon trois-quarts, qui est d'ailleurs sa signature, il se présente à travers ses pièces comme l'intellectuel raté, l'avocat sans boulot qui attend toujours que le hasard lui ouvre les portes du bonheur. L'autre point fort de Languichatte est son langage facile, son discours rare qui haïtianise le français avec une telle aisance que l'on se demande souvent pourquoi chez nous en Haïti, on ne prend pas la liberté de parler le français à notre façon.

Environ 15 ans après sa mort, Languichatte est encore présent dans notre vie quotidienne, à travers ses pièces de théâtres et ses blagues les une plus fantastiques et plus burlesques que les autres.

This presentation examines the interstices of mysticism, mothering/hospitality and community organizing in the lives of women of African descent in Brazil and the United States – a confluence about which there is little extant scholarship. Using an analytical framework that incorporates history of religions of the Afro-Atlantic diaspora, ethnographic and historical studies of contemporary social justice movements, oral histories, and womanist ethics, my work explores the moral and mystic universe of contemporary Afro-Brazilian and African American women activists.

A collaboration between Africana Studies and the Brazil Initiative, with the generous co-sponsorship of the Watson Institute, the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice, the Center for Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women, and Religious Studies.
