Bernard Fils-Aimé fled Haiti with his mother in 1966 and later became an activist, creating the Haitian Refugee Center, which offers legal services and support to migrants arriving in South Florida. Fils-Aimé moved back to Haiti in 1995 to launch the county’s first cellular network. He died this month at age 67 of the coronavirus. Sunday TODAY’s Willie Geist remembers a life well-lived.

https://www.mnhs.org/blackhistory-blackvoices The murder of George Floyd catapulted Minneapolis to the epicenter of the Black Liberation Movement. What do we mean when we say “Black Liberation” and the “Black Liberation Movement”? What are the catalysts for these movements historically and how have they been met in Minnesota and in the US?

Join distinguished University of St. Thomas professor Dr. Yohuru Williams and a panel of Black history-keepers as they chart the evolution of Black protest in Minnesota and on a national scale, from slavery through today.

Black History, Black Voices is an MNHS initiative that centers Black narratives, history, and issues. Through ongoing programs, content, and resources created by Black historians, artists, activists, and community leaders, this initiative will deepen the understanding of Black history in Minnesota and the contributions Black Americans have made.

On our 1st day in Cap Haitien, we decided to take a walk and see what was happening around the city. We walked through the square by Cathedrale Notre Dame de Cap Haitien (a.k.a. Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral). The cathedral dates back to 1670, when Haiti was a colony of France. It was in this square of the cathedral that the liberation of the slaves was proclaimed on August 29th 1793. We then walked down to Cap Haitien Boulevard (Boulevard du Cap-Haitian) a waterfront strip with lots of bars, restaurants and hotels. We ran into some interesting high schoolers and captured a funny moment. Like, comment and subscribe!
