In Haiti there is a soccer team unlike any you have ever seen. It is made up of players who have lost legs and arms, mostly during the earthquake in 2010.

Just as the players are different, so is their field, called a "pitch." People live near it. There are pools of water on it. And cows walk by.

The players kick with the same leg they stand on. Goalies defend with the only arm they have. The team is called Zaryen. That is Creole for "tarantula" - a spider that can live without one of its legs.

A balcony collapsed on Judithe Facile during the earthquake. She was near death. Soccer has brought her back to life.

JUDITHE FACILE: "Now I feel like I'm alive. Because, before that, after I lost my leg, I didn't have any hope for the future, even though I was walking on crutches."

Cedieu Fortilus says the players have changed the way Haitians think about the disabled.

CEDIEU FORTILUS: "When I see they are playing like that I'm so proud. I'm so proud. I think I'm doing a good job. So, I see so many people, even Haitian, if they are crossing the street, they take time to look at them because they are doing something very strange. Something many Haitians never see in their life."

Several organizations in the United States give money to the team, and pay for artificial arms and legs for all Haitians who need them.

Cindy Orange says:

CINDY ORANCE: "Soccer has taught me to do a lot of things on one leg that I wasn't used to doing before. I feel comfortable when I'm playing."

Haiti 🇭🇹 A country that has been on the news for almost a decade only because of negative things. The earthquake in 2010 from which the country never fully recovered. Gangs controlling the capital city of Port u Prince. More than 1000 kidnaps since January of 2021 to date, and more recently the assassination of their president Jovenel Moïse.

Traveling across the Dominican Republic all I heard was "Don't cross the border, those people are animals", so I wanted to see this with my own eyes. And guess what, the place is spectacular.

Haitian people have a very different way of behaving, their human interactions are just different than what I am used to and to be honest it took me some days to get used to it. but after that, I discover a world of the most loving and awesome humans.

Haiti feels like being in Africa, and there is a reason for that, they are essentially Africans, and the fact that the country has been in such a difficult political environment for so long, means people leave the country but almost no people come to live there, which translates into an untouched culture.

I discovered a hidden world, from the music, the culture, the language, their spiritual beliefs, Voodo, voodoo priests, and voodoo traditions.

I wish I could just recommend everyone to visit Haiti, but the truth is that it is still a dangerous place (for now), even though there are some areas that feel safer, such as Labadee, the Citadele Laferriere, and Cap Haitien, all extremely beautiful and interesting places to visit.

I wish the best to Haiti and to its amazing people, and I hope I can return soon

Haiti: A New Hope: Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, suffering everything from devastating natural disasters to brutal dictatorships. Now, there are hopes that tourism could help it rise from the ashes.

Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscri....ption_center?add_use

“In the 60s, we were number one in tourism for this part of the world”, says Fritz Parets. “And then, it collapsed...” Parets is at the helm of a bold new venture: a 55-bedroom luxury hotel, part of a scheme to put the nation back on the touristic map. Staff are professionally trained and almost all Haitian. “I live thanks to tourism”, says plumber Islet Jean-François. “It really makes life better here! When tourists stop coming, everything collapses.” Yet Haiti remains impoverished. Years of intensive farming have exhausted the country’s soils, and education is chronically underfunded. Despite the nation’s problems, hotel group boss Charles Fombrun is proud of its rich history. “It’s the first black republic… We were at the base of the end of colonialism, the slave’s revolution. Independence!”

Port-au-Prince (Things to do - Places to Visit) - PORT-AU-PRINCE Top Tourist Places
Capital of Haiti

Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital city, sits on the Gulf of Gonâve. The Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien honors the nation’s history and founding fathers.

The Iron Market, a large 1891 covered bazaar, has produce and handicraft vendors. Nearby is the immense Notre Dame de l'Assomption Cathedral, reduced to a ruin by a 2010 earthquake. Colorful gingerbread-style houses from the turn of the 19th century dot the city.

After three years of promoting my culture and country, this is an exciting moment for me. To sit at home and see a tourism television spot on my television of Haiti is breathtaking. Although I don't work for the official Haiti Tourism organization, I know I've had in impact in the way people see my beautiful country and I am proud of that!

Haiti, Experience it! Ayiti, Se La Pou'w La!

Look out for it on Networks such as Food, History, CNN, Discovery, AMC and more.

Ideas like liberty, freedom, and self-determination were hot stuff in the late 18th century, as evidenced by our recent revolutionary videos. Although freedom was breaking out all over, many of the societies that were touting these ideas relied on slave labor. Few places in the world relied so heavily on slave labor as Saint-Domingue, France's most profitable colony. Slaves made up nearly 90% of Saint-Domingue's population, and in 1789 they couldn't help but hear about the revolution underway in France. All the talk of liberty, equality, and fraternity sounded pretty good to a person in bondage, and so the slaves rebelled. This led to not one but two revolutions and ended up with France, the rebels, Britain, and Spain all fighting in the territory. Spoiler alert: the slaves won. So how did the slaves of what would become Haiti throw off the yoke of one of the world's great empires? John Green tells how they did it, and what it has meant in Haiti and in the rest of the world.
