On 11/17/21 Imamou Lele was invited to Queensborough Community College to facilitate a workshop for QCC Dance Department educator Kevin McEwen’s students. Alexandra Jean-Joseph led with basic movements of the traditional Haitian dance styles of Yanvalou, dance of supplication, Nago, dance of war, and Ibo, the dance of liberation. Sky Menesky, along with Michael Adams and Atibon demonstrated traditional percussion rhythms and taught the students a traditional Ibo Song.

Teaching Living Cultures (TLC) is CCCADI’s flagship PreK-12 arts education program that immerses students, and their educators in the music, dance, theater, visual arts, and the moving image of the African Diaspora. TLC has been successful in reaching over 4,800 students, and 140 teachers in NYC each year by developing performance, language, visual, and/or digital media skills and contextualizing the students’ classroom experience into a broader history that incorporates vibrant cultures reflective of our diverse global community. Being possessed, it turns out, is exhausting work. Just ask Mambo Edeline St. Armand. While popular culture portrays Vodou as full of curses and sticking pins into little dolls, the religion has in fact played a central role in Haitian cultural identity since the country's birth, a result of the New World's first and only successful slave rebellion. Since Brooklyn is home to the largest Haitian population outside of Haiti, we sent Thomas Morton into our own backyard to witness the realities of being possessed by Vodou's multitude of rowdy, rum-thirsty spirits.
