When Dimitry was a child, he was surrounded by homophobia. He was called a โ€œmasisi,โ€ a homophobic word for โ€œgayโ€ and was poked with sticks at recess by peers. And his father hurled condoms at him while telling him to โ€œbe a manโ€ and have sex with women. After moving to Miami, he saw a young gay man from the Bahamas who was kicked out of his home for being gay. In short, Dimitry had little incentive to come out. But he found the strength to do so anyway, and in the process, built a stronger relationship with his mother and learned an invaluable lesson: โ€œWe have to have that patience to teach them how to love us.โ€

In recent years, the world has increasingly witnessed international conflict along ideological fault lines. Western policymakers warn that authoritarian countries like Russia and China are seeking to exploit divisions within democratic societies to promote autocratic tendencies, while for decades, authoritarian countries have accused the West of doing the sameโ€”of manufacturing domestic uprisings as a way to force liberalism upon them. While history is filled with examples of conflicts along these types of ideological lines, there is little consensus among scholars or policymakers about whether statesโ€™ governing ideologies matter for their foreign policy behavior and if they do, why.

This presentation will focus in on British and U.S. reactions to the Haitian Revolution to advance our understanding of the relationship between ideology and international conflict. I show that Britain and the United States both initially isolated Haiti due to fears that the Haitians would promote or otherwise inspire the spread of slave rebellions throughout the Caribbean and U.S. South. However, after outlawing slavery in its colonies, Britainโ€™s foreign policy towards Haiti quickly diverged from that of the United States. Britain formally ended its regime dispute with Haiti, deepened its economic links with the country, and even began cooperation with Haitian leaders to police the Atlantic slave trade. Taken together, the case strongly suggests that British and U.S ideological stance on slavery was a primary source of their disputes with the Haitian regime.

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around usโ€”one that doesnโ€™t just focus on whatโ€™s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when itโ€™s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save Americaโ€”a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because itโ€™s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. Thatโ€™s it. End of mission.

Moderated by: Mary Dillard (History)

When Bart Loeser came out to his parents as gay, their response was lukewarm and the subject are rarely broached again. When he came out about his HIV diagnosis about a year later, however, the reaction was different - they cared about his health of course, but they also started to see the impact that the growing AIDS crisis was having on his community. Their own proximity to the LGBTQIA+ community inspired them to lean into activism, getting involved in their local PFLAG chapter and eventually overcoming health issues to read the names on the AIDS Memorial Quilt at the 1992 March on Washington.

President Joe Biden says he needs more information about the assassination of the Haitian President but it is "worrisome."

Gunmen assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Moรฏse and wounded his wife in their home early Wednesday, inflicting more chaos on the unstable Caribbean country that was already enduring an escalation of gang violence, anti-government protests and a recent surge in coronavirus infections.

Claude Joseph, the interim prime minister, confirmed the killing and said the police and military were in control of security in Haiti, where a history of dictatorship and political upheaval have long stymied the consolidation of democratic rule.
