In this video, you will how to make the perfect Haitian black AKA diri djon djon. It is one of the most popular Haitian dishes, and it is so delicious. You can make this rice simply with beans or you can add cashews to it like I did, you can make it with shrimp and blue swimmer crabs. For this recipes I used yellow rice from restaurant depot but you can any rice of your choice, basmati rice is a good rice to use. This rice may seem intimidated but it’s just as simple as any other rice and beans, you just need the right ingredients. Below you will find all the ingredients that I used. The mushroom maybe a little bit hard to find depending on the state you live in, but you’ll definitely find it in Florida. If you know someone that lives there have them buy it and ship to you.


Haitian black dried mushroom
Baby lima beans
Yellow rice
Epis (Haitian seasoning)
Raw cashews
Extra virgin olive oil
Knorr chicken flavored bouillon
Goya adobo
Pink himalayan salt
Irish butter
Red bell pepper
Scotch bonnet pepper
Cloves
Parsley
Thyme
Maggie cubes
Jumbo crevette shrimp Maggi cube ( this can be purchased from amazon if not available at your local grocery store)

3 Boxes of penne pasta
1 tablespoon of salt for water boiling pasta
1 tablespoon of oil

Meat mixture (let cook for at least 30 minutes)
1/2 of each belle peppers all colors diced
1 whole onion (diced
1 can of span
1 bag of ham (diced)
1 cup of epis
2 cubes of Maggie

The sauce (This what’s gone set it off)
2 cans of evaporated milk
2 12oz box of cream cheese
The laughing cow original cheese all 8 wedges
Salsa con queso cheese any brand (or ragu double cheddar)
1/2 can of evaporated milk


1/2 cup sour cream
2 Maggie cubes
1 teaspoon of adobo
1 teaspoon of Chyanne
1 teaspoon of pepper
Teaspoon of black ground pepper
1 cup 4 cheese Mexican cheese (kraft)

Top
Remainder or kraft 4 cheese Mexican cheese
Colby jack block cheese (shred the 1 cup 4 cheese Mexican cheese (kraft)

1/2 teaspoon of pepper
1/2 Teaspoon of black ground pepper

It was my first time visiting Haiti as a Haitian-American and I had a blast going to Cap Haitian and Port au Prince for the week I was here. I did travel solo, but had a guide with me at all times!

Being Haitian is a huge part of my life, but the narrative surrounding the country has never made visiting possible until now. I don’t plan on stopping here with Haiti and will absolutely be back.

I love documenting my travels and putting clips together to have forever and encourage others to get out and see the world. My goal will always be to show those who feel travel is out of reach that it is closer than they think and they too can get out here! I’m open to answering any questions about traveling in general. In the aftermath of the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti, SLC faculty, staff and students have struggled for a way to make sense of the tragedy and respond to the ongoing humanitarian crisis. While images of profound grief and suffering have been prominent in the news, an analysis of Haiti's history, the vibrancy of its culture and the importance of its political struggles have not been discussed as much. Please join us for a Teach-In on Haiti with four SLC faculty members who will provide historical, political, economic and social analysis on the current situation.
