Haiti and the Dominican Republic share a border, and an island. But the two countries are very different today: the Dominican Republic enjoys higher quality of life for many factors than Haiti. I went to this island and visited both countries, to try and understand when and how their paths diverged. And I began to learn how those differences are playing out in the present.
Vox Borders is a new international documentary series presented by lululemon, by Emmy-nominated videojournalist Johnny Harris. For this series, Johnny is producing six 10-15 minute documentaries about different borders stories from around the world.

The largest ever slave revolt in history which lead to the formation of the first ever modern black state. A story with great heroes, betrayal, courage, and resourcefulness. The oppressed rising against the oppressors.
[No B.S. History #19, NOTE: Please actually WATCH the video before commenting. It seems like a lot of commenters assume that I'm somehow demeaning the revolution in Haiti. On the contrary, I consider it one of the most important and admirable events in modern history.]
The Haitian Revolution was the only instance in all of human history of slaves successfully overthrowing those who ruled them and beginning to govern themselves. Yet 200 years later, the Haiti is by many measures one of the poorest countries on Earth. So did the Haitian Revolution deliver on its promises, or was it simply B.S.? Let’s discuss it.

Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss the Haitian Revolution. In 1791 an uprising began in the French colonial territory of St Domingue. Partly a consequence of the French Revolution and partly a backlash against the brutality of slave owners, it turned into a complex struggle involving not just the residents of the island but French, English and Spanish forces. By 1804 the former slaves had won, establishing the first independent state in Latin America and the first nation to be created as a result of a successful slave rebellion. But the revolution also created one of the world's most impoverished societies, a legacy which Haiti has struggled to escape.

In this episode of Vlogs Of History we cover The Haitian Revolution. This was the only colonial revolution to successfully abolish slavery and gain its independence from France. It was a very violent revolution and involved a lot of angry slaves who had had enough of the horrible working conditions of Haiti's sugar plantations. That and a bunch more on this week's video of Vlogs Of History! History is so interesting! :)
